Zero-Emissions Public Transport in Oslo

Image
Zero-Emissions Public Transport in Oslo Let's start at the beginning– Oslo has always been at the top of its game when it comes to sustainability. In fact, after decades of legislation and green initiatives such as its own climate budget, investments in EVs and bicycling infrastructure, and financial incentives to make sustainable choices, Oslo was awarded the title of European Green Capital in 2019. Oslo's public transport system is efficient and well-connected. In fact, it has an extensive network of tram and bike lanes and has already electrified ferries. However, its bus network had been mostly diesel-based until 2023. The 'Climate Strategy for Oslo towards 2030' lists walking, cycling, and public transport as Oslo’s future first choices for transportation. It also aims for all passenger cars on Oslo’s roads to be emission-free by 2030. Public transport, port operations, and traffic on the fjord must be emission-free in 2028. This choice entails replacing the city...

The City of Dreams, Dreams of Carbon Neutrality

Image
Mumbai, one of India's most populous cities, has recently released its first-ever Climate Action Plan, a significant milestone towards India's carbon neutrality objective by 2070. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated the development of this plan as part of its commitment to creating a climate-resilient city. Technical assistance was provided by the World Resources Institute (WRI) India and the C40 Cities network during the vulnerability assessment, greenhouse gas (GHG), and natural green cover inventory over the past six months. The resulting policy document, named MCAP or Mumbai Climate Action Plan, adopts an evidence-based planning approach and aims to mobilize resources for strategic projects. The action plan for 2022 is titled 'Towards a Climate Resilient Mumbai.' Maharashtra is committed to leading India's battle against the impending climate crisis through policy-governance changes and instilling the culture of climate action. The MCAP is d...

Everything You Need to Know About Fast Fashion

Image
What comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘fashion'?  You think of buying new stuff, keeping up with trends, or perhaps looking like your favourite celebrities and influencers that seem to have such aspirational lives – and wardrobes.  Gone are the days when trends were set by (and for) the upper class. It seems like today's fashion trends are decided from the ground up.  Fashion brands love to talk about how they're making styles 'from the street' mainstream, platforming upcoming designers and young artists, thereby democratizing fashion. On paper, this looks great. We all deserve to live our lives in garments that make us feel beautiful and resonate with our aesthetic sensibilities.  We shouldn't have to buy haute-couture to get our hands on clothes that look good.  But with this change comes a shift towards a more consumerist approach. This means that freshness, form, and mass production for mass consumption take the place of timelessness, functi...

Melting Point: Exploring the Science and Consequences of Heatwaves

Image
What is a Heatwave? A heatwave is a prolonged period of abnormally high temperatures. They usually occur between March and June and in some rare cases, they extend till July. Heatwaves occur mostly during summer in North-Western parts of India. Heatwaves can cause problems ranging from physiological stress to even death. Heatwaves are becoming even more frequent with time due to global warming and climate change. They are also becoming more intense with each passing year and breaking temperature records. Heatwaves are taking more and more casualties with time. A heatwave is declared if the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degrees Celcius or more for Plains and at least 30 degrees Celcius or more for Hilly regions. For coastal areas when the maximum temperature departure is 4.5 degrees Celcius or more from normal, a Heat Wave may be declared if the actual maximum temperature is 37 degrees Celcius or more. According to reports, heat waves are predicted to get m...

The Quest for Survival in 2050

Imagine this: 2050, array of technological developments, flying cars, life at mars, tall skyscrapers, robots as inhabitants; seriously this imagination is not less than a sci-fi movie which keeps you on the edge of your seat but here comes the unexpected climax (PS: the climax might disappoint you). Here’s where the truth lies, each day the world is degrading (seriously concerned for it), no advancements have been enough to do the bare minimum for the nature globally. Currently things are on a bad track so just give a thought about the future; what will even be the situation in 2050? Will we even live in a sci-fi movie type world? Will we not be able to live the same old life again? We’ve got the majority of questions answered . How is climate change affecting it? Again, the x-factor of the growing world, climate change is expected to have majority of the impact globally in terms of each and every field covered. A lot of changes are expected to occur by 2050, from catastrophic disaster...
